Video Transcript
This transcript is intended for those with text-to-speech accessibility readers and other access needs.
Our Grow Kits: A Step-by-Step Guide video is underscored with gentle jazz-house music. There is otherwise no sound or speech.
The entire video is a series of questions that are answered via demo clips and on-screen text.
The video opens with the title ‘First Steps’.
There is a cardboard grow-at-home oyster mushroom kit from The Cheshire Mushroom Co. facing the camera.
We see a hand pushing the central perforated window inwards, pulling it upwards and tearing it off to reveal the bag of white mycelium that the oyster mushrooms will grow from.
A penknife cuts one straight 5cm line across the bag, from the lower right-hand corner to the upper left. Another line is cut from the lower left-hand corner to the upper right, creating an X shape at the front of the white bag.
Question number one is entitled Where should I put my kit?
The answer reads as follows. Indoors. In an airy room where windows and doors are often open. In a room full of light, in a spot out of direct sunlight. Away from radiators. Somewhere you’ll remember to spray it daily. End of text.
We see a pair of hands putting the grow-at-home kit in a kitchen window. The hands turn the grow kit around to face away from the glass pane, so that the front of the box is out of direct sunlight. We then see the hands place the grow kit box on the side of a bathtub in a bathroom.
Question number one is repeated. Where should I put my kit?
The answer continues as follows. Kitchens, bedrooms and even bathrooms are great, so long as there’s a window in the room for light and air flow. Airing cupboards, garages and basements are not so good, as they are either stuffy or too dark. End of text.
We see a short time lapse video of some blue-grey oyster mushrooms growing from The Cheshire Mushroom Co. grow-at-home kit box.
Question number two is entitled How do I water my mushrooms?
The answer reads as follows. Open up the top of your grow kit box to find your spray bottle. Fill this bottle with clean water and spray into the bag at the X two to three times a day. Continue with this as the mushrooms start to grow, right up until you pick them. End of text.
We see the 15ml bottle from the grow kit spraying water at the X of the bag. The image blends into the next frame, showing the bottle spraying water at the base of a fully-grown cluster of blue-grey oyster mushrooms.
Question number three is entitled When do I pick my mushrooms?
The answer reads as follows. Seven to nine days from the first day you saw signs of a mushroom. When the caps start to flatten out and darken. If you can see spores coming out of your mushrooms, it’s definitely time to pick them. End of text.
A hand runs a finger along the darkened edges of the fully-grown, flattened-out mushroom caps to show that they are ready to be picked.
Question number four is entitled How do I pick my mushrooms?
The answer reads as follows. Grasp… twist… and pull! End of text.
We see a hand grasping the base of the blue-grey oyster mushroom cluster. The hand twists the cluster round, then pulls it off and away from the grow kit box.
Question number five is entitled How do I cook my mushrooms?
The answer reads as follows. Separate, rip off the base, and shred into thumb-sized pieces. End of text.
We see a pair of hands separating each blue-grey oyster mushroom off from its cluster. The base of each individual oyster mushroom is twisted and ripped off by hand. Each mushroom is torn into thumb-sized pieces and placed on a wooden chopping board.
The text continues as follows. In a shallow pan, add a little water, turn up the heat, and leave the lid on. End of text.
We see the blue-grey oyster mushrooms being placed into a shallow frying pan on an induction hob. A little water is poured into the frying pan. The hob dial is turned up to medium heat. A see-through, glass lid is placed on top of the frying pan.
The text continues as follows. After a few minutes, add a little oil, stir, and turn down the heat. End of text.
We see the frying pan a few minutes later, condensation forming under the steaming glass lid. The lid is lifted up and off the pan, some oil is added to the oyster mushrooms, a wooden spoon stirs them around a little, and the hob dial is turned down to low heat.
The text continues as follows. Stir every one to two minutes. Add your favourite herbs. Try chopped garlic or lemon and black pepper. End of text.
The wooden spoon stirs the mushrooms around some more. Herbs are sprinkled into the pan. A light blue, hand-held grinder adds cracked black pepper to the mushroom pan.
The text continues as follows. After ten to fifteen minutes of cooking, your mushrooms are ready to eat. End of text.
We see the hob dial being turned off, the frying pan being picked up and the golden-brown oyster mushrooms are shown to the camera.
Question number six is entitled What do I do after I’ve harvested my mushrooms?
The answer reads as follows. Pop your kit back in its spot to begin the cycle again. Continue watering. It may take another fourteen days for your second flush to appear. End of text.
We see the grow-at-home kit being placed back in the kitchen window. The bottle sprays water onto the X once again.
Question number seven is entitled When is my kit finished?
The answer reads as follows. Your kit may produce two, or even three flushes of mushrooms. If there’s been no more activity for twenty-one days straight, your kit has probably grown as much as it can. End of text.
We see the cardboard grow kit box being flattened and placed into a recycling wheelie bin.
Question number eight is entitled How do I dispose of my kit?
The answer reads as follows. Empty the contents of your kit into food or garden waste, or simply onto a corner of your garden. Recycle your cardboard box. Clean out the bag and either recycle it at your local supermarket, or check out ecobricks.org for more information on eco bricks. End of text.
We see the white bag of oyster mushroom mycelium being cut open at the top with a pair of large scissors. The spent mycelium block is emptied into a large, black compost bin.
The video closes with the title Happy growing!
The Cheshire Mushroom Co logo, which has been sitting in the lower right-hand corner of frame for the entire video, enlarges and moves to centre-frame. It is composed of white cursive text that spells out the words The Cheshire Mushroom Co.
The music licensing end credits read as follows.
Music from Uppbeat.

End of video.

1. Did you open your grow kit within two weeks of purchase, as detailed on the QR insert card?
Our grow kits are alive with active mycelium and need to be opened within two weeks of purchase, as detailed on the QR insert card, otherwise they will suffocate and expire.
2. Have you followed all four steps on the side of the box?
Mushrooms need air, light and water to grow. They will suffocate, dehydrate and expire without these things.
3. Have you been spraying the X with clean water 2-3 times a day since opening?
Spraying your kit 2-3 times a day with clean water is especially important, as detailed on the QR insert card.
Any less than this, it will dry out and expire. Any more, it will drown.
4. Has it been more than 21 days since you opened your kit?
Your kit should harvest up to three flushes of mushrooms, although this can vary.
Time between flushes can also vary, be patient!
If it has been more than 21 days since you opened your kit and there's still no sign of the first mushroom flush, please get in touch with us here.
The TCMC Grow Guarantee is only valid if your kit has produced no mushrooms at all. Second and third flushes aren't guaranteed - but they are likely!
If your query is about something else, please get in touch with us here.
